A males’ hostel with the capacity to house 5,000
students is currently under construction at Chuka University. The hostel will
cost 1 billion Kenya shillings.
Chuka University Vice Chancellor
professor Erastus Njoka announced the induction of the project in the inauguration
of the current Chuka University Student’s Association (CUSA) leaders.
Chuka University V.C said that
the 1 Billion Kenya Shillings worth hostels was aimed at providing affordable accommodation
to the First Years that are not well versed with the local community.
“It is not a move to antagonize the private
investors; we cannot be in a position to accommodate all the students. It is a
government policy that higher learning institutions should co-operate with the
local community on the provision of accommodation.” Professor Njoka said.
Chuka Campus has a student
population of approximately 13,000 with 8,000 males and 5,000 females.
Currently, the school offers accommodation to 800 students with the male
hostels accommodating 200 students. The story hostel under construction by
Ongata Building & Construction Co. will use two phases with the first phase
already underway.
The
hostel to be completed by the year 2019.
