After the Garissa attack tension filled various higher learning institutions in Mt. Kenya east region.
A SMS that did rounds
among Chuka University students few days after the attack
read in part:
Attention !!! Attention!!! We are not safe at all. Information reaching us from
(office mentioned) says………. Please security starts with you and me……. Soon
after a pilgrimage to safer havens began. Panic got a better part of the female
students.
Ladies residing inside the institution hostels – Runda and Ladies A & B - decided to seek refuge outside the school compound. Some considered their boyfriends place the safest place on earth at that time. In other peoples sorrow some elements are said to benefit and so the naughty boys- with tag names such as fimbo- had their beds filled with warmth. In the morning they were made breakfast. Their houses got cleaned for a couple of days to come.

In Meru Methodist
hospital which houses a medical training college, pieces of papers were thrown around
saying that the hospital was a target of Al Shaabab attack so the students moved
out to go seek for “ safer” places to sleep for the night. Security personnel
had to rush to the institution to ensure that they were safe.
“We had to go to the
institution together with the DCIO, NSIS officers and other police officers to
ensure that the place is properly secured. We stayed there till morning” said
Mr. Silas Murithi who is the operations manager of Ideal Security firm; the
firm is in charge of another of institutions including Methodist Medical
Training College, Meru University, KeMU, Meru Technical Training Institute and
Meru Teachers Training Institute.
Rumour from a drunkard
passing through Meru Technical Training Institute with a clarion call that Al
shaabab were going to attack the institution raised panic among the
institutions students.
“Meru Technical
Training students moved out of their hostels to seek refuge outside the
institution. Police officers from a nearby station had to spend the night there
to provide security” Mr. Murithi said.
Embu university
students lead by the president of the students union Mr. Sadera Timothy
arranged for a meeting with the institution management to assure them of their
safety. Later grills on their hostels windows were removed and a fencing
project started to surround the place. Embu University had no fence surrounding it!
But, the mother of all
panic was the one witnessed in Nairobi University, Kikuyu Campus. Students
residing in Kimberly hostel mistook blasts occasioned by faulty electric wires
for an Al shabaab attack. Then stampede ensured.
Some choose to jump as high from the fifth floor, As a result news images of heavily bandaged students were broadcasted to living rooms across the world. When normalcy returned 113 students were injured and were rushed to the city hospitals. One comrade lost his life in the process. The University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Mbithi would later call upon the institutions student community, staff and members of the public to remain calm as they dealt with the aftermath of the situation.

Chukauni.com wishes to call upon the
government and relevant authorities in charge of Comrades security to enhance security in all institutions of higher
learning countrywide. The words of Lawrence Orre, Student Embu University
College drives the point home: “an al shabaab attack on university students
means they want to paralyze the young generation. When they attack young
generation frequently in 20 -30 years to come we will experience the gap as a
country” .
