The venue of the interview is Hillside grand Hotel, you will always find Barbara Chebet here in the evenings, one hand holding a warm cup of tea and the other on her mouse pad. Her eyes quickly taking a dekko at the latest designs from a design website of her choice. Her obsession for design cannot be described with words, perhaps the slideshow of designs serving as a screen saver for her laptop does it better. She was confirmed the best designer in the recent Mr. & Miss Chuka campus Tharaka Nithi beauty contest. Barbara spoke to chukauni.com
When did you start designing?
I knew I was into designing in primary school when I used to draw up designs once my mind started wandering in class. It was my comfort place.
Who is your favorite designer?
My favorite designer should be Wambui Kabue aka miss Angel Smile. She is Kenyan… mostly uses African print. Her designs are very versatile and her work has featured in international runways. She is also an entrepreneur and started from scratch.
Balancing schoolwork and getting quality fabric around.
Locally who is do you think is best dressed musician?
The best dressed musician got to be Bien from Sauti sol. His clothes are always tailored to his physique. African print wear dominates his wardrobe. The way he dresses always suits the event and always makes a statement.
What are your plans for 2015?
Well. I am planning to do printed T-shirts and official shirts for guys and then crop tops for the girls. I have many slogans and pictures and would like to put out that.
