Today at around 5.30 am, there were blasts occasioned by a faulty underground electrical cable, next to a transformer, supplying power to Kimberly Hostel at Kikuyu Campus. The students in the hostel, thinking that they were under attack, panicked with some of them jumping from as high as the fifth floor of the hostel. In addition, there was a stampede in the hostel as students tried to exit occasioning injuries. The injured students were taken to various hospitals by the University, the Police, staff and well-wishers.
Following the incident, one student has succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Karen Hospital. Those admitted are as follows:
• Kenyatta National Hospital –113 (102 male and 11 female) injured students were received and attended to, of which 66 have been discharged while 20 have been admitted (4 are undergoing surgery and one is in critical condition).
• PCEA, Kikuyu Hospital- 54 were received and attended to, 50 of whom have since been discharged, and 4 are still receiving treatment.
• One student admitted at the Nairobi Hospital on transfer from Kenyatta National Hospital
• One student admitted at the Aga Khan hospital on transfer from Kenyatta National Hospital
• One student admitted at Karen Hospital
Most of the students admitted are in stable condition and the number of those to be discharged will increase.
The Kenya Power staff, led by the CEO, have been on the ground to rectify the electric fault and have assured the University of the safety of students with normal power supply resuming immediately after the repairs.
As we mourn the unfortunate loss of the departed student, we are also praying for the quick recovery of those who were injured. The University calls upon the student community, staff and members of the public to remain calm as we deal with the aftermath of the situation.
In the meantime, we would like to thank the management of the hospitals, the Kenya Police, Ministry of Education, Kenya Power, students, staff and the general public for their swift response following the incident.
